Frequently Asked Questions About Boiler Installation

Planning a new boiler installation? Find answers to common questions and make informed decisions for your heating upgrade.

What are the signs that I need a new boiler?

Several signs can indicate that your boiler is failing :
  • Your boiler is more than 15 years old:
  • Consider replacing an older unit with a new, high-efficiency boiler.
  • Your boiler keeps breaking down:
  • Frequent service calls might mean it's time for a new boiler.
  • Your energy bills are increasing:
  • An inefficient boiler uses more energy to heat your home, increasing your utility costs.
  • Your boiler is making strange noises:
  • Unusual banging, whistling, or gurgling sounds might mean there is a serious issue with your boiler and should be investigated by a qualified heating engineer.
  • Your radiators are not heating up properly:
  • Radiators not getting hot evenly or consistently could indicate a boiler malfunction, air in the system, or circulation problems.
  • Low water pressure:
  • Low water pressure can be a symptom of issues with the boiler. Have a heating engineer inspect the system.
  • Leaks or drips near your boiler:
  • If you notice leaks or drips around your boiler, turn off your boiler and immediately contact a qualified heating engineer to assess and fix the issue.
  • Pilot light goes out frequently: A faulty pilot light is often a sign of bigger issues to come.
  • Yellow flame instead of blue: A yellow flame on a gas boiler can mean there is incomplete combustion or a dangerous carbon monoxide leak. If you see a yellow flame, turn off the boiler and contact a qualified technician immediately..
If you are experiencing any of these issues, contact a qualified heating engineer for a boiler inspection and get advice on whether a replacement is necessary.

What is the average lifespan of a boiler?

The average lifespan of a boiler is around 15 years, though well-maintained systems might last considerably longer. It's essential to keep up with annual service and maintenance. As units age, they lose efficiency, so proactive planning for a new boiler installation can save you money and avoid disruptions.

What type of boiler is best?

The best type of boiler for your needs depends on several key factors , including your available space, fuel preferences, and budget. Here are some of the most common types of boilers:
  • Combi boilers: Combination boilers provide both heating and hot water on demand , saving valuable space. They are compact, efficient, and well-suited for smaller homes or apartments.
  • Condensing boilers: Condensing boilers are one of the most efficient types of boiler. They extract more heat from the fuel by condensing the water vapor in the exhaust gases, thus saving energy. Because of increased efficiency, condensing units can help lower your carbon footprint and reduce heating costs.
  • System boilers: System boilers heat your central heating system directly and store domestic hot water in a separate cylinder. . They are a good option for homes requiring a higher volume of hot water.
  • Regular boilers: Regular boilers, also known as conventional or traditional boilers, require a separate hot water cylinder, a cold water storage tank, and an expansion tank. They are suitable for larger properties with high hot water requirements and existing pipework.
A professional can help you choose the best system.

How do I bleed my radiators?

If your radiators have cold spots or are not heating up efficiently, they may need to be bled to improve heating performance and circulation. Bleeding radiators can also reduce noise levels and improve your system's energy efficiency. This straightforward process can help improve your heating:1. Turn off your central heating system and allow the radiators to cool down completely. 2. Locate the bleed valve on the radiator. It's usually a small, square-shaped valve on one of the top corners. .3. Place a radiator key or a flat-head screwdriver on the bleed valve and carefully turn. Air trapped in the system will escape during this process.4. Hold a cloth or container under the valve to catch any fluid that may leak out. .5. Continue turning the key until water begins to flow steadily.6. Tighten the valve clockwise .7. Repeat this process for all the radiators in your home.8. Once you have bled all the radiators, turn your central heating system on and check the pressure gauge on your boiler. . The pressure should be between 1 and 1.5 bar when the system is cold. If the pressure is too low, you may need to top it up using the filling loop, if your boiler has one. If unsure, contact a qualified engineer. By bleeding radiators, you can improve their effectiveness and the overall performance of your central heating system.

What are the signs that I need a new boiler?

Several signs can indicate it's time to replace your boiler :
  • Your boiler is more than 15 years old:
  • Older boilers are much less efficient than modern condensing boilers and are more likely to break down, so upgrading to a new, energy-efficient boiler could save you significant amounts on your energy bills over time.
  • Your boiler keeps breaking down:
  • Frequent service calls might mean it's time for a new boiler.
  • Your energy bills are increasing:
  • An inefficient boiler uses more energy to heat your home, increasing your utility costs.
  • Your boiler is making strange noises:
  • Unusual banging, whistling, or gurgling sounds could indicate a problem with your boiler and should be investigated by a qualified heating engineer.
  • Your radiators are not heating up properly:
  • Radiators not getting hot evenly or consistently could indicate a problem with your boiler's circulation.
  • Low water pressure:
  • Low water pressure might mean your boiler is not functioning optimally. Have a heating engineer inspect the system.
  • Leaks or drips near your boiler:
  • If you notice water pooling around your boiler, turn off your boiler and immediately contact a qualified heating engineer to assess and fix the issue.
  • Pilot light goes out frequently: If you have an older boiler and the pilot light goes out frequently, it may need to be repaired or replaced. .
  • Yellow flame instead of blue: A yellow flame could indicate the presence of carbon monoxide, which is a dangerous gas. . Seek immediate assistance from a qualified professional.
If you are experiencing any of these issues, contact a qualified heating engineer for a boiler inspection and get advice on whether a replacement is necessary.
