Frequently Asked Questions About Boiler Installation

Planning a new boiler installation? Find answers to common questions about boiler installation, costs, and finding qualified installers.

How much does boiler installation cost?

The cost of boiler installation varies depending on several factors, including the type of boiler, the size and complexity of your home, and labor costs in your area. Compare upfront pricing. Factors influencing price include the boiler type, size of your home, and any necessary modifications.

How do I choose a boiler installer?

Choosing a qualified boiler installer is essential for ensuring a safe and efficient installation. Things to keep in mind:
  • Experience and Qualifications: Make sure the installer is Gas Safe registered (for gas boilers) or OFTEC registered (for oil boilers) in the UK, or similarly qualified and licensed in your region. Verify that the installer has a solid track record with positive reviews.
  • References and Reviews: Ask for references and check online reviews to assess the installer's reputation.
  • Detailed Quotes: Get written, itemized quotes from multiple installers to compare costs and services.. Check for transparency and comprehensiveness in their estimates.
  • Warranty: Inquire about warranties on both the boiler itself (from the manufacturer) and the installation (from the installer)..
  • Insurance: Check that the installer has insurance coverage for any incidents during the installation.

What are the different types of boilers?

There are several types of boilers to choose from, each with its pros and cons::
  • Combi Boilers (Combination Boilers): Most common and provide both heating and hot water instantly , saving space by eliminating the need for separate hot water tanks or cylinders. They may struggle to meet high hot water demand for larger households.
  • Regular Boilers (Conventional, Heat-Only Boilers): These boilers require both a cold water storage tank (usually in the loft) and a hot water cylinder (usually in an airing cupboard), taking up more space. They deliver a consistent supply of hot water but are usually less energy-efficient than newer boiler types.
  • System Boilers: They have components built in, reducing installation time and complexity. They are more compact than regular boilers but more expensive than combi boilers. . System boilers are suitable for properties with more than one bathroom or high hot water usage.
  • Condensing Boilers: High-efficiency boilers recycle heat from exhaust gases to pre-heat water, minimizing waste. They're better for the environment and can save you money in the long run.

How do I repressurize my boiler?

If the pressure gauge on your boiler is reading below 1 bar, you'll need to repressurize the system. Consult your boiler's manual for specific instructions, or follow these general steps::1. Turn off your boiler and allow it to cool.2. Locate the filling loop. This is usually a flexible braided hose connected to your mains water supply and boiler, under the unit. It may have a valve or tap.3. Open both valves on the filling loop slowly, If your boiler uses a lever-type handle, consult the manual. Listen for the sound of filling.4. Keep an eye on the pressure gauge. When the pressure reaches the appropriate pressure, close both valves on the filling loop firmly.5. Turn your boiler back on. If the pressure is still low, repeat the process..If you're uncomfortable performing this task yourself, contact a Gas Safe registered engineer. Ensure your safety and avoid costly repairs by having it done right.
