  • Prendergast Oil
    4.9
    Boston, GB

Prendergast Oil & Energy est. 1936. Family owned and operated since 1936. Hello and thanks for visiting our site! Here is a little bit about us: We changed our name from Prendergast Oil Company, Inc. to Prendergast Oil & Energy. We felt the name change was necessary to reflect that our scope of work stretches beyond oil heat; we also offer other Products & Services as well, including our partnership with Sensibo that allows us to offer you their Sensibo Sky at a discount. Our Present: We pride ourselves on quality and consistent service. From the simplest of oil deliveries to the most complicated of installations, we see each job through to completion and ensure that you are fully satisfied. Our technicians are trained and certified and will treat your home as if it were their own. Our company was founded on personal service and attention to detail and we still pride ourselves on those. Our motto is simple: we aim to not only meet your needs, but surpass them. Our Past: Martin R. Prendergast, the second youngest of eleven children, decided to leave Galway, Ireland in 1925 in search of a better life in America. His enthusiasm, however, was met with many signs stating "No Irish Need Apply" in reference to job opportunities. After some searching, he was able to find work and saved his money for 10 years so that he was able to buy a truck in 1936. With his new truck, he started Prendergast Oil Company - delivering range oil and coal as well as ice in the summer. From January, 1942 through August, 1945, Martin was stationed in London as part of the Army Air Corps and a good friend of his ran the business in his absence. Upon his return, he worked full time at the Watertown Arsenal in addition to running POC. When the Arsenal closed in 1968, he decided to retire from both jobs and left POC in the hands of his oldest son Tom, who has run the company ever since. During that time, the company has evolved from an oil delivery business to a full service HVAC business. In 2017, the company changed its name to Prendergast Oil & Energy to better communicate their service offering to customers.

Frequently Asked Questions About HVAC Companies

Find answers to common questions about HVAC services, finding contractors, and getting the best HVAC systems for your needs.

How can I improve my home's indoor air quality?

You can take these steps to improve your indoor air quality (IAQ):
  • Regular Air Filter Replacement: Change or clean your HVAC system’s air filters regularly (every 1-3 months).
  • Professional Air Duct Cleaning: Have your air ducts cleaned by professionals every few years to eliminate dust, mold, and other contaminants.
  • Improve Ventilation: Ensure adequate ventilation in your home to bring in fresh air and exhaust stale air. Use exhaust fans in kitchens and bathrooms.
  • Control Humidity Levels: Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to maintain optimal humidity levels and prevent mold growth.
  • Clean Regularly: Dust and vacuum frequently to minimize airborne particles.
  • Avoid Smoking Indoors: Smoking indoors significantly reduces IAQ.
  • Use Natural Cleaning Products: Opt for natural cleaning products that don’t release harmful VOCs (volatile organic compounds).
  • Monitor Indoor Air Quality: Consider using an indoor air quality monitor to track pollutant levels.
If you have persistent IAQ issues, consult with an HVAC professional or an indoor air quality specialist for further assessment and solutions.

What is an AFUE rating, and why is it important?

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) measures how effectively a furnace converts fuel to heat. Higher AFUE furnaces waste less fuel. The minimum AFUE for new furnaces is usually 80%, but modern furnaces can achieve AFUE ratings of 90-98%. Investing in a high-efficiency furnace can save money on heating costs over time.

What regular maintenance should I do on my HVAC system?

You can perform some simple maintenance tasks yourself to keep your HVAC system running smoothly:
  • Change Air Filters: Change or clean your air filters every 1-3 months. Dirty air filters restrict airflow and decrease system efficiency.
  • Clear Debris: Keep the area around your outdoor unit clear of debris, leaves, and snow.
  • Check Thermostat Settings: Make sure your thermostat is set to the desired temperature and is functioning correctly.
For more complex maintenance, like cleaning coils or checking refrigerant levels, contact a qualified HVAC technician. Regular professional maintenance is crucial for extending the lifespan of your system and preventing costly repairs.

What are the different types of HVAC systems?

Several types of HVAC systems are available for residential and commercial buildings:
  • Split Systems: The most common type, consisting of an outdoor unit (condenser/compressor) and an indoor unit (air handler/furnace).
  • Heat Pumps: Provide both heating and cooling by transferring heat between indoor and outdoor air.
  • Ductless Mini-Splits: Ideal for homes without existing ductwork or for adding heating and cooling to specific zones.
  • Packaged Units: A single unit that contains all the system's components.
  • Geothermal Heat Pumps: Use the earth's stable temperature to provide highly efficient heating and cooling.
An HVAC professional can help determine the best type of system for your needs and budget.
